I don't know if you've heard, but it was really cold earlier this month. Cold enough that a good deal of things here in Chicago just shut down on one particular Monday, and I had no reason nor desire to leave my house. While I had no obligations that particular day, the "snow day" atmosphere of it all demanded a project. Homemade bagels certainly qualified. Then of course, I made them, instagrammed them, wrote about them, and let the post sit unpublished for 3 weeks. Typical.
Okay, it's offish, fall is here. Which apparently means it's time for pumpkin or something?
Seriously, though, when did seasonal appreciation for pumpkin turn into yearly pumpkin hysteria? Pinterest has been 89% pumpkin since late August. Pumpkin spice coffee selfies litter my newsfeed. I posted a filtered picture of a can of pumpkin on instagram and a lot of you "liked" it. A can of pumpkin. I'm starting to become suspicious that we've all been conned by a multi-year marketing campaign by Starbucks.
I have two suitcases lying open on my bedroom floor, stuffed with more clothes than I will possibly need over 8 days. I have to be real with you, my life is a wreck right now. I really, really don't feel like going into it. Like, you have no idea. But I'm fatigued as fuck and I lost 3 pounds in a week thanks to a shitty appetite and I am angry at the world for fucking excellent reasons. I regretted picking this recipe almost immediately, because it's fussy and has a lot of steps and I thought I was going to pass out in my kitchen. And then I fell asleep without trying it.
Sorry about the dead zone that was March and half of April. Between finals, spring break, and medical issues, I wasn't doing much (read: any) cooking or baking. I'm back today with some oatmeal chocolate chip muffins.
These muffins were inspired by one of my favorite cookies, oatmeal chocolate chip. It's hard being an oatmeal chocolate chip fan. The fake-outs are constant. "Oh, what is this oatmeal cookie? It has dark spots…oh dammit not raisins!" Said by me. Often. I really don't like raisins. I never have been able to overcome my childhood aversion, and trust me, I've tried. Continue reading
